Hurstpierpoint Tournament 2005

Lingfield took two sides to play into west Sussex for this all day event.

Lingfield Reds were in the first group. The squad was Callum Waller (GK), Harry Madkins, Harry Cox, Louis Groves, Connor O’Dwyer, Joshua Green and Callum Walters.

Game 1 v Royal Utd.

Lingfield came straight off the blocks with Connor scoring early on. They took their foot off the gas and were nearly punished but a brace from Joshua meant a confidence boosting 3-0 victory.

Game 2 v Hurstpierpoint Colts ‘A’

A repeat of the first game with Lingfield taking an early lead and then relaxing a bit too much. This was a more competitive affair and it wasn’t until two quick goals from Callum that the travelling throngs could relax. Lingfield saw the game out for another 3-0 victory.

Game 3 v Hassocks

A very well organised Hassocks side were next. This game was played in a great spirit as the cooling weather and prevailing winds began to take their toll. I think even the neutral would agree that Lingfield dominated large portions of this one, but it is goals that count. The Hassocks defence fought very well and the game finished in a pulsating 0-0 draw.

Game 4 v Marle Place Wanderers ‘A’

Callum Walters put Lingfield ahead and once again the boys seemed to sit on their lead. It was only after a smart save from Callum Waller that they lifted things. Even then both Harry Madkins and Louis had to work hard at the back. An own goal by a Marle defender near the end meant a flattering 2-0 win.

Game 5 v Fishersgate Flyers

It was Callum once again who struck first for Lingfield with a great run and shot. Once again this was the prompt for Lingfield to admire their good work and Fishersgate got back into it. Harry Cox was dominating midfield though and it looked good for the second half. So it proved as goals from Joshua, Callum and an own goal meant Lingfield took this one 4-0.

Game 6 v Cuckfield Cosmos Utd

Lingfield scored in the first minute with who else but Callum Walters taking the applause. Cuckfield responded well and the first half remained a tight affair. The team talk worked wonders though as Lingfield extended their lead through Joshua. Connor scored the third with a diving header at the far post before Joshua rapped things up. The second 4-0 win in a row. The boys were buoyant and beginning to think this may be their day.

Game 7 v Cranleigh Youth

The boys knew now that a semi-final place was assured but still needed a win or a draw to confirm themselves as group winners. I think we all knew what the script was going to be as yes, you’ve guessed it, Callum Walters scored the first goal. Cranleigh showed great spirit and were making Lingfield fight for every tackle but we took the game with another Callum goal following a great move involving Connor and Harry Madkins.

This meant that Lingfield won the group having played seven, won six and one draw. In the process scoring 18 goals and not conceding any. A fantastic achievement that Callum Waller in goal was especially proud of.

Pool B

Lingfield Blues played in the other group. The squad was Max Hill, Seth Nye, Max Potts, Oliver Gache, Alex Smith, Tom Madden, Rhys Child and Nathan Crittall.

The boys played six games and won 2, drew 2 and lost 2. This put them equal second in their group on points, but unfortunately they missed out on an intriguing meeting against Lingfield Reds in the semi-final on goal difference. Agonisingly one goal being the margin.

Special mention to Max Hill who played four games in goal and looked like a veteran, and Max Potts who looked very dangerous on the left wing every time he got the ball.

Semi-final: Lingfield Reds v Handcross Tigers

Lingfield met the other group winners and seemed a bit overawed as they struggled to get into the game. Connor scored and this was followed by another from Joshua. At 2-0 the boys once again sat on their lead and nearly paid the price as Handcross scored from a free kick, a rasping shot into the top corner that left the keeper with no chance. A nervous few minutes followed and it was to everyone’s relief that the referee’s whistle signalled the end of the match.

Final: Lingfield Reds v Marle Place ‘B’

This game was deserving of the final as both sides started brightly playing some great football. It took a sharp save from Callum Waller to prevent Lingfield from going behind. It was left to the other Callum to put Lingfield in the lead. Marle Place tried desperately to get back into it. Harry Madkins was being kept busy and a desperate last ditch tackle from Harry Cox was required as the boys hung on.

Into the second half and Lingfield began to dominate. A great team effort followed but it was left to Callum Walters to take the applause as he scored two in quick succession to claim a hat-trick. Joshua put the icing on the cake as Lingfield won 4-0 and took their first trophy.

Special thanks to the coaches Chris Groves, Richard Smith but in particular Mike Potts who unfortunately tendered his resignation following the tournament due to work commitments.

It was fitting that Mike finished on a high, and I would like to use this site to personally thank Mike, on behalf of all the parents and families for his hard work and efforts over the past few years. Cheers mate……..
Dave Waller

Langton Green Football Fiesta - Sat 4th June 2005

Lingfield took a mixed squad for this all day event at Langton Green in Kent.

The players making the trip were: Callum Waller (GK) Rhys Child, Louis Groves, Max Potts, Alex Smith, Connor O'Dwyer, Joshua Green and Harry Cox.

Lingfield's first game was played as soon as they arrived against Seal Juniors. The boys took a while to get going and it took two sharp saves from Callum to keep them in it. They eventually got going though and two great goals from Joshua sealed the win.

The second game against Tonbridge Angels went according to plan and a Josh effort followed quickly by another from Max meant consistency was the name of the game, and another 2-0 victory.

A very lively Rusthall were next with two exceptional forwards playing for them. As expected this proved a tough game and Louis and Rhys were both having great games at the back with some superb tackling.
The game was end to end with Joshua scoring again only to see Rusthall equalise and the game finish in a respectable draw.

Onto Tonbridge Ajax. Lingfield played really well and showed great bouncebackability to again take a 2-0 win. The scorers were Alex and Connor.

By this stage only two sides were unbeaten. Lingfield and a very well organised Hastings Youth. They were next and proved to be worthy group leaders as they took the game to Lingfield.
The boys defended well, but it was not to be as Hastings scored to take a narrow but ultimately crucial win 1-0.

TW Forresters were next who had been playing some excellent football in earlier games. This proved to be the most exciting game for the watching family and friends as some lovely passing was played. Harry put Lingfield one up, only for Forresters to score a deserved leveller. This only spurred Lingfield on though, and it was left to Joshua to score with the last kick of the game.

Game seven and Lingfield beat Tonbridge Invicta 1-0 with a Connor goal following a superb run and cross from Max.

We played the hosts Langton Green in game eight and the boys looked a bit tired by now. The game finished 1-0 with who else but Joshua taking the applause.

The ninth and final game was against Coxheath & Farleigh. By now the boys had worked out that the group winners Hastings were going through, but despite this disappointment they showed good spirit and took the game 1-0 with a Connor free kick.

In a group of ten teams Lingfield game second with a record of played 9, won 6, drew 2 and lost 1.

This should be seen as a very successful day as there were some very good sides in the group. Congrats to Hastings ho were worthy winners.

Well done to all the boys who did their bit but special mention to Joshua. He top scored for us with 6 goals and looked dangerous every time he got the ball. Nice one!!

Tonbridge Juniors v Lingfield Lions

The squad of Callum Waller, Max Hill, Max Potts, Callum Walters, Louis Groves, Joshua Green and Rhys Child travelled into Kent in buoyant mood following the previous week's escapades at Forest Row.
They started as they left off as well, with Callum Walters scoring a brace, the second from a great Max Hill ball to take an early 2-0 lead.
The shell shocked Tonbridge side gradually got back into it and Lingfield had to show great spirit to hold them off, but the game finished 2-0.

There was no stopping the boys in the second game as goals from Callum Walters (2) Joshua Green and Harry Cox meant a 4-0 lead.
The boys seemed to relax a little and Tonbridge scored twice to ensure a nail biting finale bit the Lions saw the game out and it finished 4-2.

Mike was especially pleased as this was his Birthday.
Many happy returns.......

Forest Row v Lingfield Lions

The intrepid Lions along with coaches, parents, grandparents, chauffeurs etc made the journey down to Forest Row for this tie. Although the sun was shining it was a very cold day but the boys did their best to warm things up for the watching crowds.
The squad was Callum Waller, Louis Groves, Rhys Child, Oliver Gache, Max Potts, Harry Cox, Callum Walters and Joshua Green.

Max and Louis started bossing things in midfield right from the off and were feeding Callum up front who was showing lots of effort. Lingfield took a deserved lead when a great free kick from Harry Cox left the Horam keeper with no chance. 1-0. This seemed to spur Forest Row on and the move of the match proved decisive as a cross was hit on the half volley past Callum, 1-1.
Into the second half and Callum Walters headed brilliantly towards goal only for it to hit the post. This spurred Lingfield on and it was Joshua who made the breakthrough, 2-1.
A veritable football feast ended with a close Lingfield victory but this was an excellent game of football played between two competitive sides. Well done boys.

In the second game Lingfield proved to be too strong for their opponents and two goals from striker and man of the match Callum Walters saw them home for a 2-0 victory.

Broadoak and Horam v Lingfield Lions

Due to the designated reporter having a blonde moment there is no match report.
Lingfield won the first game 4-0 the goals coming from Callum Walters (2), Harry Cox and Louis Groves.
In the second game Callum scored again in a 1-1 draw.

Sat 19th March 2005

Lingfield Lions v Jarvis Brook

Squad for the day was Callum Waller, Louis Groves, Harry Cox, Joshua Green, Max Potts, Oliver Gache, Rhys Child and Callum Walters.
The Lions came up against a very organised Brook side who created lots of early chances to take the lead. Slightly against the run of play however, it was Lingfield who went one up as Callum Walters fed Joshua who scored an excellent goal.
Into the second half and it was real end to end stuff, keeping the watching spectators entertained. The Jarvis pressure eventually told and they equalised to make it 1-1. Despite a close shot by Callum Lingfield could not get the lead back and it finished 1-1.

The second game was not such a close affair and a very disappointing performance resulted in a rare defeat, finishing 2-0. Although Lingfield were not their usual selves, congratulations to Jarvis Brook who played very well in both games.

Saturday 19th February 2005

Lingfield lions welcomed both Maresfield and East Hoathly FC. The squad for today was Callum Waller, Louis Groves (Capt), Harry Cox, Callum Walters, Oliver Gache, Rhys Child, Joshua Green and Max Potts.

Lingfield Lions v Maresfield

The boys started brightly in this game with two early corners putting the pressure onto Maresfield. Callum Walters nearly opened the scoring but his shot went agonisingly past the post. This early pressure nearly went to waste though as a Maresfield forward broke through, but Callum Waller raced from his line to kick the ball clear.
This spurred the boys on and Lingfield took a deserved lead when a Harry corner was put in by Oliver, 1-0. Unfortunately the lead only lasted a short time as Maresfield quickly equalised.
The game ebbed and flowed from end to end. The midfield trio of Josh, Louis and Max were playing well, supported by Rhys. Harry was looking good at the back and it was from a Harry pass that Callum Walters scored for Lingfield to re-gain the lead 2-1. This was followed by another from Josh to make it 3-1.
This only spurred Maresfield on again, and they showed some good bouncebackability as following a goalmouth scramble they scored again. It was now 3-2 and game on!!
Both teams had chances to score, the best of which was another Josh shot that hit the post, but it was not to be, as an exciting encounter finished with a Lions victory by 3 goals to 2.

Lingfield Lions v East Hoathly

Once again this game started at a very quick pace, and it took a Callum save and some desperate defending from Rhys and Harry to stop the away side from taking an early lead. Lingfield however began to get back into the game and following some prolonged pressure they took the lead as an unfortunate East Hoathly player scored an own goal. 1-0.
Lingfield nearly extended their lead through Max but the boys went in at half time one up.
As the second half started East Hoathly began to take the game to Lingfield and they were rewarded as their main forward broke through to equalise. 1-1.
It was really cold and the boys were all struggling in the prevailing wind (as was the referee - well done Kevin) making good football difficult.
It was fairly evident that it would take something special to warm things up, and so it proved. Harry Cox was marshalling the defence around the half-way line when the ball ended up at his feet. Within a couple of seconds it was nestling in the east Hoathly net having been despatched there by a ferocious shot from Harry. A spectacular effort and one worthy of winning any game. End of the match and a Lingfield victory 2-1.
This was a superb effort by all the boys in some difficult conditions. well done to all, especially Harry Cox who took the Man of the Match award and captain for the next game.

Lingfield Lions v Tonbridge Juniors

Lingfield welcomed the boys and parents from Tonbridge on a cold and windy morning at Lingfield FC.

The squad for the day was Callum Waller (capt), Louis Groves, Max Potts, Rhys Child, Oliver Gache, Joshua Green and Callum Walters.

In the first match Lingfield started very slowly and Tonbridge dominated the early play. All the boys seemed a bit cold and not very motivated, with the only exception being Louis Groves who was covering every inch of the pitch in a determined effort to spur things on. Even his efforts were in vain though as Tonbridge scored a deserved opener to lead 1-0 at half time.
The talking to given by Mike and Chris at half time seemed to improve matters and Lingfield began to come back into the game as the second half began.
Rhys began quashing any attacks with Callum Waller looking assured in goal. Oliver was looking lively in midfield with Callum Walters making some good runs up front. It was only a matter of time before the Lingfield pressure told, and sure enough a ball from Louis to Josh then sparked a mazy run followed by a rasping shot at the near post was enough for Josh to equalise. It was only a minute later that Max put Lingfield 2-1 up with five minutes left.
Tonbridge came back very strongly and nearly scored from a corner but Louis, who was having a great game saved Callum's blushes with a goal-line clearance. This proved to be crucial as Tonbridge managed to get an equaliser in the last minute, the game ending in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following a short break The Lions prepared to take on a different Tonbridge side that were buoyant having just beaten The Eagles on an adjacent pitch.
Lingfield started this game playing some lovely passing football, but were having trouble breaking down a stubborn Tonbridge defence. Indeed Tonbridge threatened several times but some hard tackling from the midfield dynamo Louis Groves put paid to any threats on goal.
Midway through the first half Lingfield scored the best footballing goal I have seen for a while. The keeper rolled the ball to Louis who began a run down the right. He then passed the ball through to Callum Walters who slid the ball past the advancing keeper for a 1-0 lead. This was soon doubled as Callum again proved what a worthy signing he has been as he scored again.
Tonbridge almost got one back but Callum Waller kept a clean sheet as he dived to his right to tip a shot past the post.
As the game went on Lingfield began to control things and shortly before the end Joshua scored again and it was smiles all round as Lingfield finished winning 3-0/

All the boys contributed to a great mornings entertainment for the spectators but Man of the Match and captain for the next game was Louis Groves who was excellent in midfield. Well done Louis.

Thanks again to Kevin for refereeing, the boys now look forward to a game against Maresfield & East Hoathley on the 19th, meet 10am.

Lingfield Lions v Rusthall Under 9's

On a crisp and sunny winter morning the boys and coaching staff welcomed Rusthall FC, who have proved worthy opponents in the past. A keen contest was expected, and the boys from both sides didn't disappoint as the games got under way......

The squad for Lingfield was Callum Waller (GK & Capt), Harry Cox, Max Hill, Joshua Green, Louis Groves, Max Potts, Oliver Gache and Callum Walters.

The first game started brightly with Lingfield taking control early on. Max Hill was running around like a greyhound chasing everything, well supported by Oliver Gache in midfield. Joshua Green was making some excellent runs as usual and Harry Cox was playing at the back as if he had played there all the time. It was a fine through ball by Joshua to Callum Walters who was making his debut up front that broke the deadlock. Callum calmly slotting the ball home past the advancing Rusthall keeper. Louis Groves quickly added another and it was 2-0 to Lingfield at half time.
Into the second half, and Rusthall began to get back into it. A Rusthall forward broke through and was one on one with Callum Waller in the Lingfield goal, but Callum bravely dived at the forwards feet to stop a certain goal, injuring himself in the process. Following lengthy treatment the game continued, and within 30 seconds the same Rusthall forward broke through again towards the Lingfield goal. The crowd held it's breath expecting Callum to stay on his line, but unbelievably he again dived at the forwards feet and got the ball.
This was typical of the gutsy performance by all the boys and they saw the game out to complete a 2-0 victory.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the second game Lingfield started very slowly and Rusthall laid siege to the Lingfield goal. Harry Cox was playing really well at the back but even he had to admit defeat after five minutes as a Rusthall forward got through and buried it to score. They nearly doubled their lead shortly after but Callum jumped up and got both hands to a shot heading foer the top corner to deflect it onto the bar.
This seemed to spur the boys on, and Callum Walters and then Joshua promptly scored to give Lingfield a 2-1 lead at half time that they probably didn't deserve.
In the second half however Lingfield began to take control and a Max goal followed by two from Callum Walters to complete his hat trick meant that the boys strolled to a 5-1 victory.

Mike and Chris were very pleased with the boys efforts and had some difficulty choosing the man of the match and skipper for the next game.
Special mentions to Callum Walters who scored four goals in his first games for Lingfield and looked dangerous throughout. Welcome to the club, and we look forward to some great performances. Also to Harry Cox who looked very assured at the back, but Mike decided that Callum Waller should retain the armband for the next game following two very brave saves and good performances.
Also, many thanks to Kevin Green who had a very good game as referee.

Lingfield Minors FC v Escots FC

This evening kick-off was arranged to give the boys the unique experience of playing football on the front pitch under floodlights.
An opportunity that a lot of older players have not had the opportunity to do. Who better to play against than Lingfield's biggest rivals Escots. So the stage was set. The pitch was looking great having been prepared by willing volunteers during the afternoon. The bar was open, the kitchen was supplying hot refreshments and a crowd of over 120 were packed into the main stand creating an excellent atmosphere. Unfortunately the only thing that could not be controlled was the weather, and the heavens opened during the evening soaking the players (and referee!!) but this did not dampen the spirits of all the boys from both sides as the feast of footballing flair began.......

The games were played by mixed Lingfield sides and the squad for the first game was, Tony Jenner, Seth Nye, Declan Murphy, Rhys Child, Oliver Gache, Louis Groves, Nathan Critall, Max Potts and Tom Madden.
The game started brightly with both sides playing attacking football. Indeed before the crowd had chance to draw breath, the score was 2-2. So it remained until half-time. Both teams gathered with their respective managers before the second half began.
I don't know what was said to the Lingfield boys, but it proved to be very effective as they began to dominate the game. Chance after chance was created and the goals began to rain in. (No pun intended) At the end of the game Lingfield had finished 7-2 winners. The scorers were Tom (3) Oliver (2) Louis and Nathan but every one of the players contributed to what proved a great victory. Well done boys.

The squad for the second game was Callum Waller, Josh Green, Harry Madkins, Harry Cox, Alex Smith, Connor O'Dwyer and Alexander Milton.
Once again the game was played in a torrential downpour, but this did not deter either side, and this game provided a quality of game that belied the young age of those involved.
Escots made their intentions clear straight away by bombarding the Lingfield defence and started the better of the two. This pressure eventually told when an Escots forward went through and slotted home to put them one up.
Lingfield began to get back into the game but could not equalise before half-time and it remained 1-0.
Again the interval proved to be crucial and the home side came out in the second half with all guns blazing. Both Harry's were working hard, with Alexander running his socks off on the left wing and Josh playing well at the back. The breakthrough came when Connor played the ball to Alex who calmly placed the ball past the Escots keeper to receive great acclaim from the home supporters.
Escots were far from out of the game though and towards the end had a great chance to win it, bit the shot which was aiming for the top corner of the goal was brilliantly tipped over by the keeper and captain for the day Callum, a superb reflex save.
The score remained 1-1 until the final whistle sounded and the boys made their way into the dry.

Special mention to The Old Cage Public House who were the match sponsors for what proved to be a very successful evening, and to the committee of Lingfield FC for allowing the use of the main pitch.

Lingfield Lions v Tunbridge Wells Forresters

Saturday 23rd October 2004

Lingfield made the journey across Kent with a depleted squad due to a few players being unavailable.
The team for the day was Callum Waller, Rhys Child, Oliver Gache, Harry Cox, Alexander Milton and Max Potts.

The first game started very slowly with both sides having some of the ball, bit very few chances on goal. In actual fact the only shot on target was a shot from Harry that put the boys 1-0 up.
The second half was a better one for Lingfield who kept chances for Forresters to a couple of long distance efforts, but Rhys in defence and Callum in goal were both on form, and they never looked like scoring.
At the other end Max nearly added to the slender lead, and Oliver wa running his socks off showing great determination in midfield.
The breakthrough came when a good move involving Max and Harry was finished by Alexander to make it 2-0.
This is how it finished.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the second game Lingfield started alot brighter, showing no mercy to the home side as they laid siege to their goal.
Shots from Harry and Max gave the keeper no chance as Lingfield went in at half time two up.
In the second half Alexander scored another to make it 3-0 before Callum, who had now come out on pitch made it 4-0.
Having a good lead the boys relaxed a bit, and Forresters scored two quick goals to make it 4-2, but Lingfield held on to win the game 4-2.
Man of the Match was Oliver - Well done.

Saturday 25th September 2004

Lingfield Lions made the short trip to Imberhorne Lane for games against Forest Row and Meads.
The squad for the day was Callum, Harry, Louis, Rhys, Joshua, Oliver, Max P and Max H.

Lions v Forest Row

The boys made an indifferent start in the cold damp conditions. They were cheered on by the Dads present, while the Mums were huddled in a group nursing hangovers and showing great bouncebackability finding out from their friends what had actually happened the night before at the curry house. Stories of drunken antics are still being denied from all corners of the village.
Anyway, back to the footy. Harry and Joshua both tested the Forest keeper whilst Rhys was his usual solid self at the back. Max P was making great runs along with Oliver whilst Harry C showed great enthusiasm in defence.
Despite this Forest held firm until a Louis goal saw the Lions go 1-0 up.
In the second half Forest Row came back into the game, and it took a match winning save from Callum, the second of two good saves, in the last minute to secure a tight victory for the boys.

Lions v Meads

The Meads side appeared stronger than last year but Lingfield really turned on the style, and it was an amazing 7-0 at half time.
The boys eased up in the second half and the game finished a resounding 10-0.
The scorers were Joshua (3) Louis (2) Harry (2) Max P, Oliver and Callum who played on pitch for the last ten minutes.

The man of the match award was shared by Joshua and Callum, but all the boys deserve a pat on the back for a great all round performance.
