Hurstpierpoint Tournament 2005
Lingfield took two sides to play into west Sussex for this all day event. Lingfield Reds were in the first group. The squad was Callum Waller (GK), Harry Madkins, Harry Cox, Louis Groves, Connor O’Dwyer, Joshua Green and Callum Walters. Game 1 v Royal Utd. Lingfield came straight off the blocks with Connor scoring early on. They took their foot off the gas and were nearly punished but a brace from Joshua meant a confidence boosting 3-0 victory. Game 2 v Hurstpierpoint Colts ‘A’ A repeat of the first game with Lingfield taking an early lead and then relaxing a bit too much. This was a more competitive affair and it wasn’t until two quick goals from Callum that the travelling throngs could relax. Lingfield saw the game out for another 3-0 victory. Game 3 v Hassocks A very well organised Hassocks side were next. This game was played in a great spirit as the cooling weather and prevailing winds began to take their toll. I think even the neutral would agree that Lingfield dominated large portions of this one, but it is goals that count. The Hassocks defence fought very well and the game finished in a pulsating 0-0 draw. Game 4 v Marle Place Wanderers ‘A’ Callum Walters put Lingfield ahead and once again the boys seemed to sit on their lead. It was only after a smart save from Callum Waller that they lifted things. Even then both Harry Madkins and Louis had to work hard at the back. An own goal by a Marle defender near the end meant a flattering 2-0 win. Game 5 v Fishersgate Flyers It was Callum once again who struck first for Lingfield with a great run and shot. Once again this was the prompt for Lingfield to admire their good work and Fishersgate got back into it. Harry Cox was dominating midfield though and it looked good for the second half. So it proved as goals from Joshua, Callum and an own goal meant Lingfield took this one 4-0. Game 6 v Cuckfield Cosmos Utd Lingfield scored in the first minute with who else but Callum Walters taking the applause. Cuckfield responded well and the first half remained a tight affair. The team talk worked wonders though as Lingfield extended their lead through Joshua. Connor scored the third with a diving header at the far post before Joshua rapped things up. The second 4-0 win in a row. The boys were buoyant and beginning to think this may be their day. Game 7 v Cranleigh Youth The boys knew now that a semi-final place was assured but still needed a win or a draw to confirm themselves as group winners. I think we all knew what the script was going to be as yes, you’ve guessed it, Callum Walters scored the first goal. Cranleigh showed great spirit and were making Lingfield fight for every tackle but we took the game with another Callum goal following a great move involving Connor and Harry Madkins. This meant that Lingfield won the group having played seven, won six and one draw. In the process scoring 18 goals and not conceding any. A fantastic achievement that Callum Waller in goal was especially proud of.
Pool B Lingfield Blues played in the other group. The squad was Max Hill, Seth Nye, Max Potts, Oliver Gache, Alex Smith, Tom Madden, Rhys Child and Nathan Crittall. The boys played six games and won 2, drew 2 and lost 2. This put them equal second in their group on points, but unfortunately they missed out on an intriguing meeting against Lingfield Reds in the semi-final on goal difference. Agonisingly one goal being the margin. Special mention to Max Hill who played four games in goal and looked like a veteran, and Max Potts who looked very dangerous on the left wing every time he got the ball.
Semi-final: Lingfield Reds v Handcross Tigers Lingfield met the other group winners and seemed a bit overawed as they struggled to get into the game. Connor scored and this was followed by another from Joshua. At 2-0 the boys once again sat on their lead and nearly paid the price as Handcross scored from a free kick, a rasping shot into the top corner that left the keeper with no chance. A nervous few minutes followed and it was to everyone’s relief that the referee’s whistle signalled the end of the match. Final: Lingfield Reds v Marle Place ‘B’ This game was deserving of the final as both sides started brightly playing some great football. It took a sharp save from Callum Waller to prevent Lingfield from going behind. It was left to the other Callum to put Lingfield in the lead. Marle Place tried desperately to get back into it. Harry Madkins was being kept busy and a desperate last ditch tackle from Harry Cox was required as the boys hung on. Into the second half and Lingfield began to dominate. A great team effort followed but it was left to Callum Walters to take the applause as he scored two in quick succession to claim a hat-trick. Joshua put the icing on the cake as Lingfield won 4-0 and took their first trophy. Special thanks to the coaches Chris Groves, Richard Smith but in particular Mike Potts who unfortunately tendered his resignation following the tournament due to work commitments. It was fitting that Mike
finished on a high, and I would like to use this site to personally
thank Mike, on behalf of all the parents and families for his hard work
and efforts over the past few years. Cheers mate……..

Thursday 28th October 2004
Lingfield Minors FC v Escots FC
This evening kick-off was arranged to give the boys
the unique experience of playing football on the front pitch under
floodlights.
An opportunity that a lot of older players have not
had the opportunity to do. Who better to play against than Lingfield's
biggest rivals Escots. So the stage was set. The pitch was looking great
having been prepared by willing volunteers during the afternoon. The bar
was open, the kitchen was supplying hot refreshments and a crowd of over
120 were packed into the main stand creating an excellent atmosphere.
Unfortunately the only thing that could not be controlled was the
weather, and the heavens opened during the evening soaking the players
(and referee!!) but this did not dampen the spirits of all the boys from
both sides as the feast of footballing flair began.......
The games were played by mixed Lingfield sides
and the squad for the first game was, Tony Jenner, Seth Nye, Declan
Murphy, Rhys Child, Oliver Gache, Louis Groves, Nathan Critall, Max
Potts and Tom Madden.
The game started brightly with both sides playing
attacking football. Indeed before the crowd had chance to draw
breath, the score was 2-2. So it remained until half-time. Both teams
gathered with their respective managers before the second half began.
I don't know what was said to the Lingfield boys, but
it proved to be very effective as they began to dominate the game.
Chance after chance was created and the goals began to rain in. (No pun
intended) At the end of the game Lingfield had finished 7-2 winners. The
scorers were Tom (3) Oliver (2) Louis and Nathan but every one of the
players contributed to what proved a great victory. Well done boys.
The squad for the second game was Callum Waller, Josh
Green, Harry Madkins, Harry Cox, Alex Smith, Connor O'Dwyer and
Alexander Milton.
Once again the game was played in a torrential
downpour, but this did not deter either side, and this game provided a
quality of game that belied the young age of those involved.
Escots made their intentions clear straight away by bombarding
the Lingfield defence and started the better of the two. This pressure
eventually told when an Escots forward went through and slotted home to
put them one up.
Lingfield began to get back into the game but could
not equalise before half-time and it remained 1-0.
Again the interval proved to be crucial and the home
side came out in the second half with all guns blazing. Both Harry's
were working hard, with Alexander running his socks off on the left wing
and Josh playing well at the back. The breakthrough came when Connor
played the ball to Alex who calmly placed the ball past the Escots
keeper to receive great acclaim from the home supporters.
Escots were far from out of the game though and
towards the end had a great chance to win it, bit the shot which was
aiming for the top corner of the goal was brilliantly tipped over by the
keeper and captain for the day Callum, a superb reflex save.
The score remained 1-1 until the final whistle
sounded and the boys made their way into the dry.
Special mention to The Old Cage Public House who were the match sponsors for what proved to be a very successful evening, and to the committee of Lingfield FC for allowing the use of the main pitch.
Lingfield Lions v Tunbridge Wells Forresters
Saturday 23rd October 2004
Lingfield made the journey across Kent with a depleted
squad due to a few players being unavailable.
The team for the day was Callum Waller, Rhys Child,
Oliver Gache, Harry Cox, Alexander Milton and Max Potts.
The first game started very slowly with both sides
having some of the ball, bit very few chances on goal. In actual fact the
only shot on target was a shot from Harry that put the boys 1-0 up.
The second half was a better one for Lingfield who kept
chances for Forresters to a couple of long distance efforts, but Rhys in
defence and Callum in goal were both on form, and they never looked like
scoring.
At the other end Max nearly added to the slender lead,
and Oliver wa running his socks off showing great determination in
midfield.
The breakthrough came when a good move involving Max
and Harry was finished by Alexander to make it 2-0.
This is how it finished.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the second game Lingfield started alot brighter,
showing no mercy to the home side as they laid siege to their goal.
Shots from Harry and Max gave the keeper no chance as
Lingfield went in at half time two up.
In the second half Alexander scored another to make it
3-0 before Callum, who had now come out on pitch made it 4-0.
Having a good lead the boys relaxed a bit, and
Forresters scored two quick goals to make it 4-2, but Lingfield held on to
win the game 4-2.
Man of the Match was Oliver - Well done.
Saturday 25th September 2004
Lingfield Lions made the short trip to Imberhorne Lane for games against
Forest Row and Meads.
The squad for the day was Callum, Harry, Louis, Rhys, Joshua, Oliver, Max P
and Max H.
Lions v Forest Row
The boys made an indifferent start in the cold damp conditions. They were
cheered on by the Dads present, while the Mums were huddled in a group
nursing hangovers and showing great bouncebackability finding out from their
friends what had actually happened the night before at the curry house.
Stories of drunken antics are still being denied from all corners of the
village.
Anyway, back to the footy. Harry and Joshua both tested the Forest keeper
whilst Rhys was his usual solid self at the back. Max P was making great
runs along with Oliver whilst Harry C showed great enthusiasm in defence.
Despite this Forest held firm until a Louis goal saw the Lions go 1-0 up.
In the second half Forest Row came back into the game, and it took a match
winning save from Callum, the second of two good saves, in the last minute
to secure a tight victory for the boys.
Lions v Meads
The Meads side appeared stronger than last year but Lingfield really turned
on the style, and it was an amazing 7-0 at half time.
The boys eased up in the second half and the game finished a resounding
10-0.
The scorers were Joshua (3) Louis (2) Harry (2) Max P, Oliver and Callum who
played on pitch for the last ten minutes.
The man of the match award was shared by Joshua and Callum, but all the boys
deserve a pat on the back for a great all round performance.
