Lingfield Minors Results - Season 2002 - 2003

Saturday 10th May
Footie Fun 2003 - East Grinstead Football Club

A great day was had by both players and supporters, with the competition bringing out a few mums that aren't normally seen. Many thanks to the organisers of the Lingfield Minors for arranging our entrance into the competition and to East Grinstead Wasps for putting on a great morning's football

Lingfield Lions - Group A

Someone more than rattled the Lions cage today and they came out roaring for their biggest ever goal feast! With a total tally of 22 goals in their 5 group games and not a single goal scored against them what coach wouldn't have had the biggest grin of the season on his face. The squad for the day was made up of Alex M (7 goals), Callum (2 goals), Declan (3 goals), Jacob, Lewis G (1 goal), Max 5 goals), Olly (3 goals), Rees, Richard and Seth (1 goal).

The Lions settled down quickly from match one and the 3 - 0 result against Ashurst Wood Cox's boosted moral and team spirits for the tough morning ahead. Callum provided his usual high standards in the goal with his powerful kick securing ground for Lions throughout the games supported by Olly who shared this important position. Alex Milton who was celebrating his seventh birthday was determined to score a goal for each year and worked hard to meet his target. There was some fine teamwork with players not holding back on setting up goals by making timely passes for others to take the glory with the score, notably in the 3rd game match Seth to Lewis and Alex scored and the 5th where Max passed to Lewis onto and Declan scored. Four of the days goals were from good throw in's finding space for the striker to send it home. This is what all those months of training have been for ! The tough game came in the 4th match against Copthorne Minors B the tipped favourites of the group. Although the Lions seemed surprisedwith the opening pace and the size of the opposition they were not daunted. An early goal in the first half from a Lewis / Max combination saw Copthorne placed under pressure and they responded well. Second half and Richard and Rees on to add fresh legs to the game, Rees dug in to defend in the way he does best and the team joined him to defend their advantage to bring this to a 1- 0 win. Mike said afterwards he told you all to play defensive mid field and didn't you all listen ! Making it through to the finals was a fantastic effort.

With 15 points the Lions went through to the finals against the only other team on the day to have 15 points and not to have conceded any goals the Escot Eagles. If I had to bet on a match against a Lion and an Eagle I wouldn't want to stake too much money either way! Lingfield had some early possession but a bit of careless marking saw the Escots run hard to goal. Some continued hard attacking by Escots meant the defenders were kept busy. Second half new legs saw some possession regained but Escots had a win in their sights, a block by a good Lion wall and great final save by the Lions goalie saw the whistle blow a 1-0 win to Escots. The disappointed faces soon turned to smiles when the medals came out and the Lions had their moment of glory at the presentations.

Lingfield Eagles - Group B

The Eagles had all 10 squad players available for what was the highlight of the football season at the East Grinstead under 7s tournament.

Playing five, 6-aside qualifying matches was a tough test for the team, and the Eagles started slowly with a goalless draw in their first game. The second match saw the team playing near rivals Escots and unfortunately the game was lost 2-1.

With only one point from 2 games, the pressure was now on if they were to qualify for one of the finals. The whole team reacted well to the situation and won their third game against Meads Harris 2-1. This also gave the parents and other spectators the lift that was needed to cheer the players on. Confidence was now high, and the fourth game against Meads Maynards saw some flowing football resulting in a worthy 4-1 win. It was still important to win the final qualifying match and the team secured another convincing victory 4-0.

Bowl Final Match Report
The Eagles had now qualified for the Bowl Final, against Copthorne Minors. The team all knew that they were capable of winning the match and all players rose to the occasion. From the first whistle, Connor, Jamie and Tom ensured that the ball was in Eagles possession, and Connor having beaten two players, passed the ball through to Alex who struck the back of the goal to make it 1-0. Within a minute from the restart, Tom won possession in his own half and passed the ball forward to Alex who made sure his shot hit the net again to make the score 2-0. The game was now firmly in Eagles control, the second half saw some stubborn defending. Jack was rarely called in to action, but kept concentration and saved a few strikes on goal. Harry Madkins in defence confidently swept up any dangerous moves from Copthorne, who were now throwing everyone forward. Nathan and Harry Robinson came on to ease some tired legs, and showed real determination in the tackle. The team defended the lead until the final whistle that was greeted by loud cheers from the supporters and jubilation from the players.

The squad all played their part during the course of the day, concluding in the presentation of the Bowl Cup.

Eagles Squad : Phil Romaro, Jack Barnett, Harry Madkins, Harry Robinson, Lewis Battle, Tom Madden, Connor O'Dwyer, Nathan Crittal, Jamie Rickman , Alex Smith.

Summary of Results.
Played 6, Won 4, Drawn 1, Lost 1. Goals For 13, Goals Against 4
Scorers - Alex 7, Tom 3, Connor 2, Own Goal 1.
(Written by Richard Smith)

Although we shouldn't boast about it the Lingfield Minors as a whole proved to be the best village team in the competition. With our Lions winning all 5 league matches (without conceding a goal) and coming runner up in the Cup Final, and our Eagles winning the Bowl Final, no other village team were as successful.

All credit to the managers and coaches of the teams, the parents and siblings of the players and of course all the budding stars that make up the Lingfield Minors U7 Football Club.

Well done everyone

12th April  2003 vs Ridgeway Sweepers

Lingfield Minors

Lingfield Lions 0 - 2 Ridgeway Sweepers

Lingfield Lions 1 - 2 Ridgeway Sweepers

Lingfield Eagles 1 - 1 Ridgeway Sweepers

Lingfield Eagles 3 - 0 Ridgeway Sweepers

1st Game Lingfield Lions 0 v Ridgeway Grasshoppers 2

Mike did pass the comment after this game ' Have you all been drinking too much beer last night? ' The Grasshoppers did set a furious early pace which had the Lions struggling to keep up. Declan had the first 2 attempts at goal, followed by Max but the Grasshopper goalie was having none of it. An early penalty for the Grasshoppers put the first goal on the score sheet, even if Jamie did try to persuade the ref his decision was wrong ! Five minutes into the second half and the Grasshoppers put their second one away, this seemed to be enough to stir the Lions into some attacking action. Grasshoppers stopped from getting their third when Seth knocked the ball out of play. Then Nathan and Declan both had attempts at the Grasshopper goalie but he stood firm. A final save by Callum who had been kept busy throughout and the ref blew time.

2nd Game Lingfield Lions 1 Ridgeway Sweepers 2

This game saw Callum back out on the pitch and Seth's first game in the goal. The Sweepers started out with an early attack but Nathan was determined to dig in with Jamie and defend. First attempt at the Sweepers goal was from Callum with some fine up front running and support from Max. The Lions were getting it together in this second game and seemed determined to keep the Sweeper goalie much busier than the Grasshoppers. Nathan had a fine try at goal but it was saved. Seth made a great save at the first of the Sweeper goal attempts only to have them boot it home at the second attempt. This was a much better showing from the Lions with some determined defending from Declan and some star quality from Jamie who went on to take joint man of the match with Max. Callum scored the only goal for the Lions and Seth had to find his goalie hands and feet quickly in this game. It showed that the the Lions had woken up and proved it was Coke they were drinking last night not Beer !

The Men of the Match were Max Potts and Jamie Rickman

Eagles 1st match - Ridgeway Sweepers - Match Drawn 1-1

The Eagles started this match with their usual flurry of attacks, with Tom, Connor and Alex pressing forward from the first whistle. The whole team were passing the ball with growing confidence and had the majority of possession. A number of shots were well saved by the Sweeper's keeper, until Alex drove the ball home from close range mid way in the first half. Although the Sweepers were under pressure, their forwards always looked threatening on the break and equalised in the second half. In goal, Phil put in a strong performance and came to the team's rescue on two occasions late in the game with brave saves. Harry Madkins and Harry Robinson needed to be at their best at times, and kept cool heads and looked comfortable and solid in defence. Perhaps it was slightly disappointing that the match ended 1-1, but all in all a fair result.

Eagles 2nd match - Ridgeway Grasshoppers - Match Won 3-0

With no substitutes available for either game, the same team took to the field determined to put in a strong performance and end the day with a deserved win. Again, every player continued to work hard for each other and this paid off when the ball broke to Tom who fired a fine shot in to the roof of the net. In the second half, Tom struck again within a minute of the restart to extend the lead. The Grasshoppers tactically changed a number of players to bring on fresh legs to really test the tiring Eagles. Connor's skill and determination was plain to see in midfield and Alex continued to stretch the opposition in attack. Phil, and the two Harrys were rarely bothered during this game but retained concentration to clean up when called upon. Tom deservedly scored his hat trick following another slick passing move, which pleased the whole team and their supporters.

The decision of the Man of the Match was given to the players, who awarded the trophy to Tom Madden for his three strikes.

5th April  2003 vs East Grinstead Meads

Eagles 5 - 1 Meads
Lions 2 - 1 Meads
Eagles/Lions 5 - 0 Meads

Another great day for Lingfield Minors. With three convincing wins today the boys confidence is sky high.

The morning kicked off with a nice hot cup of tea for the watching crowds, a very welcome start. The first half of the first game was quite embarrassing. Our boys had scored 3 times in almost as many minutes. Connor, Alex and Tom worked well together and scored a total of 5 goals between them. Connor with a hat trick and the others got one each. Harry Madkins and Philip didn't have much to do in defence although Harry managed to get injured and went off after just 5 minutes. Harry Robinson took his place and with Jamie and Richard putting in good performances the match ended 5- 1 to Lingfield.

The second game was a little closer and saw a candidate for the goal of the season. A great run down the right by Alex, getting behind their defence crossed it to Declan who confidently hit the back on the net with one touch. The crowd went wild !! Reece had his usual solid match and created a goal from nothing as he won the ball from the opposition, steam rolled himself passed a couple of defenders and then slotted it in the back of the net. Olly and Callum played well together with support from Seth and Louis. Max played another great game with a few great one two's with Nathan. Jack played well in goal allowing the opposition past him only once, a great performance. The match finished 2-1.

The last game saw the Eagles play the first half and the Lions play the second half. Again Alex and Connor showed the skills up the front. This time Alex got his hat trick with two of his goals being scored with his left foot. Connor scored the other goal. The second half saw Callum place one past the keeper and the game finished 5-0.

The Men of the Match were Alex Smith and Declan Murphy

29th March  2003 vs Escotts

Lingfield

Lingfield 0 - 0 Escotts

Lingfield 0 - 0 Escotts

Lingfield have suffered some big defeats by Escotts in the past and so they had their work cut out today.

Escotts were so confident they only brought one team to play two games back to back. As you can see from the final results above, both games were very evenly matched and finished with nothing separating the two sides. Every single player put in a superb performance and we couldn't have asked for more.

So upbeat were the Minors after the two hard fought games that they jointly agreed to take on the Lingfield U8's team. It was Mike Potts vs Geoff Wheeler, and with the youngsters working as a team so well and fired up by the challenge, there was only going to be one winner. Mike Potts lead the U7's to win 3-1 with 2 superb goals from Alex and one from Callum.

What a great day for the Lingfield Minors U7's Football Club and the Men of the Match were Reece Child, Harry Madkins, Alexander Milton and Connor O'Dwyer. Very well done to each of them.

22nd March  2003 vs Uckfield Grasshoppers

1st Game against Uckfield Grasshoppers B - Lingfield Eagles

Within a minute of kickoff we saw 2 great attempts at goal by Tom and Alex. After 5 mins the Eagles claimed their first goal by Alex. Grasshoppers equalised despite Phil's great goal keeping. After being brought down Tom was given a penalty which unfortunately went a little wide. Connor soon put the Eagles ahead again with a great goal just before half time. The second half saw Connor strike again making it 3-1. Our 4th goal was achieved with good passing from Nathan to Phil to Connor. The game ended 3-1.

2nd Game against Uckfield Grasshoppers A - Lingfield Eagles

The first goal attempt came from Connor and Alex, and then a solo effort by Connor, but it was prevented by excellent defending by Uckfield Grasshoppers. However within 5 mins Connor scored his first goal of the game and soon after scored a 2nd. Alex soon followed suit and scored 2 first class goals bringing the score to 4-0. A good goal attempt by Uckfield was stopped by Phil kicking the ball clear out. The second half saw the Eagles defending well by Louis, Tom Nathan and Lewis Battle on his debut performance for the Eagles.

1st Game against Uckfield Grasshoppers A - Lingfield Lions

This was a fast and furious opening half with Olly making 3 attempts at goal before the Grasshoppers found their pace and fought back. A Grasshopper corner saw their first chance but Callum's was there with a dive before kicking it right into Grasshoppers danger zone and Max's left foot attempting goal. Grasshoppers came back with the pressure but soon enough Declan found form with a tight turn and shot to make the first goal of the match belong to the Lions. Second half saw an early free kick to Grasshoppers with a great defense put up by Seth and Jamie being tested to the full. Grasshoppers clinched an equaliser before a good corner from Richard raised the Lion's hopes. A final push by the Grasshoppers saw the 3rd goal go against the Lions making it a 2 - 1 win to the Grasshoppers.

2nd Game Uckfield Grasshoppers B - Lingfield Lions

The Lions were out to roar after their first game defeat. Lingfield faced the game and it wasn't long before Alex M and Declan together had the ball up front for their first attempt at goal, shortly after a long shot from Max set Declan up with his second goal of the day. Some swift defending was needed as Grasshoppers fought back and Callum made sure the advantage was not to be given away. Second half saw Jack put on the goalie shirt and the Lions put on the pressure, plenty of action and good runs from Alex and Jamie helped the Lions on the way to their second goal as Seth knocked it to Callum to belt it into the net. The Grasshoppers weren't going out without a fight and kept the Jack and the defenders working, but the Lions kept hold of their 2 - 0 win to finish a great morning of football.

Thanks to the Grasshoppers for their hospitality and great pitches.

Man of the match went to Callum Waller and Connor O'Dwyer

8th March  2003 vs Escotts

Although the two teams were taken to Escotts the whole day was very much a Lingfield Minors day. The teams were mixed up quite a bit and training was happening while players were not on the pitch.

Lingfield

Escotts 3 - 0 Lingfield

Escotts 4 - 0 Lingfield

The first game saw the debut for Reece, who had just become old enough to play for the team. His gutsy performance helped Lingfield keep the scoring as low as it was. Although Escotts scored 3 goals, Reece and Callum made a great partnership at the back. Jamie was determined to show his younger brother, Ben, that he was still able to run after his holiday, and played really well. Tom demonstrated why he was Man of the Match last week and Declan soon made his presence felt after having a mid season break. Richard, Jack and Max all showed great determination despite the score, and Nathan kept his head up even without his Mums support ! The final score, Escotts 3 Lingfield 0

Man of the Match was well deserved by Reece Child on his debut appearance.

The second game was just as tough. Although the Escotts had much the same players, and we hoped they would be a little worn out, they put in another great performance. Harry Madkins and Philip again did well to concede just 4 goals. Although Philip seemed reluctant to pick the ball up his clearances and saves were more than adequate. He also managed to stop Escotts scoring from the penalty spot, by "psyching out" the penalty taker to miss the goal all together. Alex Smith and Connor had little chance to show their skills as the ball was barely out of Lingfield's half, but each had some great solo runs and they never stopped battling. Seth and Louis played well together and when Alexander was brought on we nearly scored the very next minute. Harry Robinson had waited patiently most of the game but when he came on he put in a superb performance. Good enough in fact to win Man of the Match.

So Man of the Match went to Harry Robinson.

1st March  2003 vs Ashurst Wood and Rusthalls

Today saw the introduction of the two official Lingfield Minor's Teams. The Eagles and the Lions. See each match report below. Also the Man of the Match trophy will now be presented to a player from each team.

Lingfield Eagles

Lingfield Eagles 2 - 0 Rusthalls

Lingfield Eagles 7 - 0 Ashurst Wood

Although the weather wasn't quite what we've come to expect it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the players. It was noticed that one of the mothers was getting quite involved in the game and we almost saw Lisa Critall making her debut appearance as she encouraged Nathan on !

The Eagles played well together as a team against Rusthalls and from the start looked like winning comfortably. The first half saw Alex open the scoring with a great dribble passed a couple of defenders and then finishing by hitting the back of the net. This was quickly followed by Nathan who broke away from his marker and making it two nil. The second half saw more of the same good work by Connor, Tom, Harry Robinson and Jamie although the third goal remained elusive. Without the usual goalkeeper, Philip kept a clean sheet aided by Harry Madkins in defence.

The Eagles second game was a joy to watch. Not quite so good for the opposition. As Lingfield grew in confidence and seemed to be more aware of their team mates positions, the goals just kept coming. Tom opened the scoring followed by two of the best goals seen to date by Alex. Tom then slotted another passed the keeper before half time. With Alex and Tom chasing hat-tricks, Nathan joined in to score again followed quickly by a great goal by Harry Robinson. With only minutes to go Tom's hat-trick went in and the defence managed to keep another clean sheet.

The Man of the Match had to be shared by Alex Smith and Tom Madden.

Lingfield Lions

Lingfield Lions 2 - 0 Ashurst Wood

Lingfield Lions 0 - 1 Rusthalls

The Lingfield Lions looked every inch an established team from the start. With a great debut outing by Alexander Milton, and sterling performances by the rest of the team, they looked unbeatable. Callum displayed his usual quality goal keeping talents and never looked like letting any goals in. Declan and Olly played well up front and Declan was soon through and hitting the back of the net. At half time Richard was itching to get on and showed why, with a hearty performance. Jack and Max connected well and supplied a through ball for Louis to convert into a goal.

In the second game the Lions were caught out at the start and spent the rest of the game chasing an equaliser. Again Alexander showed his footballing skills and never stopped running. Jack made a few half chances which tested the keeper, as did Max. The teams were quite well matched and the persistence of the whole team deserved to be rewarded with a goal, but it was not to be. They were sporting in defeat and warmly shook the opponents hands at the end.

The Man of the Match went to Alexander Milton on his debut performance.

22nd February  2003 vs Jarvis Brook

Jarvis Brook 1 - 0 Lingfield

Jarvis Brook 1 - 1 Lingfield

On another fine Saturday morning, Lingfield Minors had some of their most evenly matched games to date. On a pitch that should have displayed a 45% gradient warning we started the first match kicking uphill. The local team knew this advantage and scored within 30seconds. This shocked our boys and it took a while before they got back into the game. The first half was spent defending our goal with Callum and Harry playing very well together. Our forwards, Alex, Max and Louis, hardly saw the ball, which was a shame as our new recruit, Connor, could not show us what he was made of.

The second half gave us the advantage of the slope and many more attacking opportunities. Seth, Nathan, Jack and Olly played well as a team and put together some great passes between them. Jack had a couple of half chances and was unlucky not to have scored. Tom came on and showed his flair, but we just couldn't beat their defence. The match ended with the initial lucky opportune goal being the only difference between the sides.

In the second game, our team were more ready at the start and we soon went into the lead with a superb solo goal by Alex. Connor put him through and he placed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. Callum and Harry remained solid in defence and Philip and Richard held their own in a hard fought match.

The second half saw a Jarvis Brook attack finally getting through to make it one all. Lingfield showed their spirit by coming close to winning the game with some great individual skill and a defence that looked unbeatable. The match finished one all.

Although the Mum's wanted to leave, to snatch the last few hours at the shops, the boys' enthusiasm eventually won through and we played two friendlies. This gave the two new official managers of the team, Darren Crittal and Richard Smith, a chance to assess the boys talents in a match situation. They both talked positively about the future of the team and their dedication towards the good of the club as a whole. You can see their pictures on the Organisers page.

Today saw the start of the Lingfield Minors Man of the Match competition. A trophy would be presented to the player that contributed the most towards the teams performance. Due to his hard tackling and level headed approach to defence, the first award went to Harry Madkins. Mike presented the trophy which can be seen on the Hall of Fame page.

Note - I am getting more and more busy with www.LovelyLingfield.com work and as such I'm looking for a volunteer to actually write the report. I'll add it to the site and update pictures, but if anyone out there fancies turning their hands to match reports please contact me here via e-mail. Many thanks.

14th December  2002 vs Tunbridge Wells

Sorry, no match report either !

2nd November  2002 vs Ashurst Wood

Lingfield 8 - 0 Ashurst Wood

Lingfield 6 - 0 Ashurst Wood

The weather has always been good to the Lingfield Minors, and a pleasant November morning saw them win by their greatest margin yet. By scoring 14 goals and conceding none, in two games, they demonstrated just what a well balanced and talented team could achieve.

The first game saw a new player making his debut, and demonstrating why he was chosen for the team. Rhys played in midfield and showed he could tackle well and run with the ball when needed. Lingfield's demolition of the opposition started with Max scoring two fantastic goals. The first from a pass by Alex and the second that started right at the back. Harry won the ball from the opposition, passed out wide to Jack, who ran with it before laying it off for Alex who put Max through. Max then skillfully placed it in the back of the net.

Jack was itching to get on the score sheet and it wasn't long before his determination paid off. He scored two, with his second goal coming from a superb solo run from the halfway line and a cool finish to put Lingfield ahead 4-0. At this point the players parents were screaming louder than a bunch of twelve year olds at a West Life concert !! After halftime and a complete team substitution Nathan got on the score sheet with a great right foot blast that their goal keeper hardly saw as it shot passed him. Lisa's proud cheering could probably have been heard back at Lingfield, but it was his first goal of the season, so she can be forgiven. Phillip made a quick but essential appearance as he was involved in a couple of Lingfield's goals. Louis had a great game in midfield and enjoyed a few solo runs before making some decisive passes to team members. One pass set up Ollie, who finished off the opposition with a hat-trick of goals one after the other. One from a great corner by Seth and a first time strike into the top corner of the goal. Richard showed what a worker he is by running non-stop during his brief but important spell in the match. The final whistle went with Lingfield winning 8-0, and the parents were almost embarrassed for the opposition, but didn't show it as they congratulated the whole team on a great job well done.

In the second game Callum decided he wasn't really needed in goal because of the teams great performance and the unbeatable wall he had in front of him, which was Harry. (No parent biased there you understand !) So Callum was on pitch and he displayed that he's not only a good keeper, he can put the ball away as well. He scored two great goals in quick succession to put Lingfield ahead 2-0. Although Alex didn't score he was fundamental in the team and opened up their defence allowing team mates to get the glory goals. Max popped up again to score his third of the day, followed by Jack scoring his third of the day too. Jacob had a good game and made some crucial tackles to ensure Lingfield had a clear sheet. So it was 4-0 going into halftime. The second half only saw two goals. Seth with a superb blast that the keeper had no chance of stopping and Ollie finished the day off with his 4th goal, the highest scorer of the day. The final score was Lingfield 6, Ashurst Wood 0.

A great day was had by all.

19th October  2002 vs Tunbridge Wells Forresters

Lingfield 4 - 0 Tunbridge Wells Forresters

Lingfield 2 - 3 Tunbridge Wells Forresters

The Lions were confident going into this game as they had already beaten the team in a pre-season friendly. The Forresters looked impressive as usual, but Lingfield more than matched them with their brand new strip.

The match kicked off and within minutes a scramble in the Forresters goal mouth resulted in Jack opening the score sheet.

Despite some obvious coaching from the Forresters team coach Lingfield went further ahead with a solo effort by Ollie with a run from the half way line. Ollie was involved in the next goal as well, as he passed it through to Jack who beat the keeper to make it 3 - 0.

The second half saw the Forresters looking more determined and Callum had to save Lingfield on more than one occasion. The goal came from a pass from Richard to Nathan on the wing, who crossed it to Tom in the middle of the pitch to control it and put it away to make the final whistle 4 - 0 to Lingfield.

The Forrester's second team only had 5 players which threw Lingfield a bit as Mike had to quickly re-asses his tac-tics.

Callum was called on a number of times and remained solid at the back. He even passed a ball up field to Jack to open the scoring again. The Forresters soon pulled it back so the score was 1 - 1 going into half time.

The Forresters kept the pressure on and scored again to take them into the lead for the first time. Again Jack got one back. The Forresters were relentless and with just a few minutes left they managed to beat Callum to make the final score Lingfield 2 Forresters 3.

Both teams played really well and shook hands sportingly at the end.

28th September  2002 vs Ridgeway Sweepers

Ridgeway Sweepers 0 - 2 Lingfield

Ridgeway Sweepers 1 - 3 Lingfield

The Lingfield Minors travelled away for their first league match of the season. An early meeting time of 8:30am at the club didn't put off many of our loyal supporters travelling with the players to the ground in Tunbridge Wells.

The first match started well with Oliver slotting the ball into the back of the net after just 4 minutes making the score 1 -0. It stayed that way until late on in the second half, when Callum made a great save, followed by a quick clearance to Tom on the right wing. He controlled it well and passed it forward to Alex who finished off a spectacular move to end the match 2 - 0. A great result.

In the second game the Sweepers looked more determined, but Harry Madkins put paid to that as he opened the scoring with a powerful blast from 10 yards. Soon afterwards Jack found himself through and his cool finishing meant Lingfield were ahead 2 -0 again. Half time came and many of the players looked like they needed a rest, but they were all pestering Chris to be part of the team. He wasn't sure of his decision as the Sweepers got one back at the start of the second half, but was soon happy as Alex hit the back of the net again with a long shot into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. The keeper had no chance and the final whistle went with the score Lingfield Lions 3, Ridgeway Sweepers 1.

The whole team played well particularly, Max, Louis, Phillip, Declan, Seth, Nathan and Richard.

21st September 2002 vs Tunbridge Wells

Lingfield 3 - 2 Tunbridge Wells

Lingfield 2 - 0 Tunbridge Wells

Lingfield had trained hard over the summer since their defeat against Forest Row and didn't intend to lose this match. Especially as it was a week before the start of the league. Although the opponents turned up in full strip and performed a warm up on the pitch like the All Blacks, Lingfield were not going to be put off.

Straight from the whistle you could see that Lingfield meant business. It wasn't long before we saw the ball hit the back of the net and Jack Barnett perform a great goal scoring celebration. Soon afterwards we were on the attack again and Tom Madden finished off a great pass from Declan Murphy to make it 2-0. Just before the half time whistle we were celebrating again with a fantastic effort from Max Potts, chipping it over the keeper, making the score 3-0 going into half time.

Lingfield must have become complacent as we then saw Tunbridge scramble back to 3-2. With minutes to go Tunbridge were through again, and it was only a well timed tackle from Harry Madkins that ensured victory for Lingfield.

The second game was much of the same, seeing some great play by Ollie Gaché, Alex and a superb save from Callum. The final whistle went with Lingfield winning by 2-0 to finish off a great days' Football.

This can only help to build our confidence for a good result in the league next week.

13th July 2002 vs Forest Row

Lingfield 1 - 3 Forest Row

Lingfield Minors first ever match together against a well established team from Forest Row. Despite a great solo effort by Jack, our star goal scorer, the match ended with Forest Row winning 3-1. Lingfield improved greatly as they got used to playing together and we look forward to greater things from them in the league.

Lingfield Minors Results - Season 2003 - 2004

Saturday 8th May 2004
The East Grinstead Town Football Tournament

Lingfield Lions met at a wet and breezy East Grinstead F.C. for the annual tournament that they came close to winning last year. The squad was Callum Waller, Rhys Child, Max Potts, Louis Groves, Oliver Gache, Alexander Milton, Joshua Green and Harry Cox. Mike Potts and Chris Groves holding the reins!!

Match 1 v Ashurst Wood Cox's

Ashurst started very brightly putting the Lions under some early pressure. Rhys made several good tackles, keeping the score at half time 0-0. The second half was a different story as the boys stepped up a gear and began to play some lovely football. Alexander made a great run along the left and crossed for Harry to slot home the first goal. This spurred the boys on and Harry soon made it 2-0 with a superb shot in the top corner. It was left to Joshua to supply the icing on the cake as he picked up the ball in his own half, he then beat three opponents before calmly placing the ball past the keeper to complete a 3-0 win.

Match 2 v Copthorne Yellow

Copthorne proved to be much stronger opponents and Lingfield had trouble breaking down a very resolute back line. When this was beaten the Copthorne keeper made two excellent saves. In the last 5 minutes Lingfield nearly scored when a long Harry throw was headed against the post by Alex. A superb move that deserved a goal. A minute before time justice was done as a carbon copy move resulted with Alexander lashing the ball into the top right hand corner. A 1-0 win now confirmed the Lions through to the semi-final with one game left.

Match 3 v East Grinstead Wasps

The rain was still falling and the pitches were now very muddy making good football difficult, but this did not dampen the boys spirits as Lingfield won this one 2-0 with goals from Harry and Max. It took two great saves by Callum to ensure the Lions marched on without conceding a goal.

Semi-Final v Escots

The Lions met their rivals in a tense semi-final. Escots fielded a very strong side as they decided to only enter one team this year. Both defences won the day on a very wet pitch with very few chances to score. It finished 0-0 and went into extra time. Escots took the lead with a low shot at the near post beating a desperate dive from Callum. The Lions tried desperately to get an equaliser with Harry coming close on two occasions, but it was not to be as Escots hung on to go through to the final.

Bowl Final v Lingfield Eagles

Both losing semi-finalists met in a bowl final with The Eagles having just been beaten on penalties in their match. Understandably the boys were all in a somber mood as both sides had won their respective league unbeaten and this match was played in a very quiet atmosphere. Alex scored the only goal of the game with a great lob in the first minute and the boys played the rest of the game with no further score. Although ultimately ending with only a medal to show for their efforts, Lingfield Lions showed some superb footballing skills during the day showing all who watched just how far they have all come this season. Well played boys!!

Lingfield Eagles were confident of doing well in this year's tournament and the whole squad was available consisting of Tony Jenner, Harry Madkins, Seth Nye, Declan Murphy, Nathan Crittal, Connor O'Dwyer, Tom Madden and Alex Smith.

Match 1 v Copthorne Black - Won 1-0

The Eagles started the first match playing a new defensive formation to avoid any chance of an early setback. This plan worked well and soon the team had control of the game and launched continuous attacks on the Copthorne goal. Alex scored the only goal of game early in the second half.

Match 2 v Meads - Won 3-0

This match proved easier for the Eagles and the team formation was changed to a much more attacking line up. Alex opened up the scoring following a perfect cross from Connor on the right. Tom skilfully dribbled his way passed the Meads defence on more than one occasion and passed the ball well. His two goals were fully deserved making the final score 3-0.

Match 3 v Escots - Won 2-1

The Eagles all knew that this game was going to decide who topped the group. Escots started the stronger and the Eagles defence stood firm, until a left sided cross was unfortunately deflected in to our net. Half time saw a change back to an attacking formation and Connor very quickly scored a magnificent equalizer, floating the ball in from distance. Their keeper had no chance. The Eagles enjoyed a succession of attacks and the ball broke to Alex who bravely slid in against their keeper to score the second. Escots now looked deflated and the Eagles deserved the victory.

Semi-Final v Copthorne Yellow - Drew 1-1 Copthorne win on penalties 3-2.

This was a match that unfortunately ran away from us. Copthorne scored with virtually their only attack of the game, and the Eagles could have scored many more. That's football and only seems to happen in knock out stages of a competition. Credit also to Copthorne for defending well. Tony made what is likely to be his save of season in the first half and must have fancied his chances of saving all three penalties. However, all three were taken very well. Alex scored Lingfield's goal during normal time and together with Tom scored both penalties.

Bowl Final v Lingfield Lions

This game was meant to be a final, but not surprisingly as they were up against their team mates the Lions, the game seemed uneventful. Alex scored what proved to be the winner early on. Well done to both sides. The Eagles played some outstanding football and entertained throughout. Everyone contributed but Connor and Nathan deserve special mention for their determination. Alex and Tom consistently threatened to score and Seth, Harry and Declan bravely defended Tony's goal.

Saturday 1st May 2004 vs Langton Green

Lions

Match 1 Won 2-0, goals scored by Harry Cox and Alexander Milton

Match 2 Won 4-1, scorers were Rhys Child, Max Potts and Harry Cox (2)

Match 3 Won 2-1 Tom and Max on the score sheet.

Eagles

Match 1 Won 5-3 (Alex 3, Connor, Tom)

Match 2 Won 3-1 (Alex 2, Connor)

Saturday 17th April 2004 vs Langton Green

Lions

In the first game against Langton Green the Lions started in determined mood and the boys seemed really keen to get a result. Langton had several early attacks but these were stopped by Rhys at the back. Then a pass seemed to be going through to the Langton keeper but Louis had other ideas and nipped in to steal the ball and then have the skill to pass across goal for Harry to score into an empty net. An excellent goal, thoroughly deserved . The first half finished 1-0 but early in the second half a long throw from Harry caused mayhem in the Langton penalty area and Alexander stroked it in for 2-0.

The Lions then seemed to go to sleep and Langton had two excellent chances to score, but two excellent saves from Callum, one of them a superb reflex save denied the Langton forwards a goal. Any further chances were sorted by Joshua who was playing at the back in place of flu victim Rhys. Max then scored a great goal to make it 3-0 before an own goal proved the icing on the cake rounding off a quality performance and a 4-0 victory.

The second game was a different story, played against a much stronger Langton side. It was real end to end stuff, but the Lions got an early lead through a shot from Max to make it 1-0 at half time. Mid-way through the second half a Langton forward got through and passed it across to a team mate to score and make it 1-1. The game flowed from end to end and was excellent to watch. Either team could have won, but in the end nobody could break the deadlock and it finished a very respectable 1-1 draw.

This really was an excellent performance by the boys and I'm sure Mike and Chris will be very pleased to see the rewards for all their hard work.

Well Done

Saturday 3rd April 2004 vs East Grinstead Meads

Panthers

Match 1 - Panthers 0 Meads 1
The Panthers seemed to struggle in the first game when the strength of the Meads side got the better of the challenges in the middle of the pitch. Meads scored towards the end of the first half and the Panthers battled the rest of game without being able to find the equaliser.
Match 2 - Panthers 3 Meads 1
In the second match the Panthers were much more combative and didn't give up on any fifty-fifty balls. Jack Barnett scored the first goal with a powerful shot and Meads equalised before half time. In the second half, Kathryn Nichols and Jamie Rickman scrambled two goals in crowded penalty areas, and Richard Wheeler made a fantastically brave save with his chest to complete the win.
Match 3 - Panthers 1 Meads 4
For the second set of matches in a row, the third game seemed too much for the Panthers as they ran out of steam in the second half. Meads went ahead in the first half before Jamie Rickman equalised for the Panthers. Turning around at 1-1 hopes were high for a second win but the Meads were far stronger and scored three further goals to run out winners.
Another good days football and lots of fun for all!!!

Saturday 27th March 2004 vs EG Meads and Ashhurstwood.

Eagles

The first match against East Grinstead Meads was tougher than expected and the team only started to play when the opposition levelled the score at 2-2 with five minutes remaining. The final score of 2-4 was probably a fair result as the Eagles certainly had more chances during the match. Seth scored the first goal and Alex netted the other three.

The second game against Ashurstwood saw a marked improvement. The team kept its shape, and Tom who played well during the game with some skilful runs, opened the scoring soon after the first whistle. Connor had an outstanding game in midfield, and deserved his first hatrick of the season. The Eagles hit the post at least 4 times during the match and the Ashurstwood goal keeper made a number of good saves. Alex scored two goals, making the final score 0-6. Tony, Nathan and Declan contributed well in both victories – well done the Eagles.

Lingfield Lions v Ashurstwood

The Lions started brightly and dominated the whole of this game. Louis was working really well in midfield with some great passing, Rhys was his usual tough obstacle at the back with some superb tackling. Oliver took over at the back in the second half and proved himself as an excellent defender.

Joshua was also working well, making some great probing runs down the wing. It all went wrong however, at the start of the second half when a rare attack from Ashurstwood resulted in a goal despite a great attempt from Callum in goal, who was unlucky as he nearly stopped the shot. Lingfield worked very hard to equalise and were rewarded just before full time when a shot from Alexander went in at the far post. It finished 1-1

Lingfield lions v East Grinstead Meads

The boys proved too strong for Meads and dominated the game, with the whole team playing really well. Louis (2) and Joshua scored as they romped home to a 3-0 win. Well played boys.

Saturday 13th March 2004 vs Escotts & Forest Row (Home)

Eagles

The Eagles knew they would have their work cut out today. Tony, Harry and Declan were ready for a hard match in defence and the Escotts battled hard and came close to scoring a number of times. Up front Connor and Alex had a few chances provided by Nathan, Seth and Tom but it was from Declan that the goal came. He won the ball, passed it to Connor who found Alex in the middle to slot it home. Eagles managed to cling on to this lead and were relieved when the final whistle came, giving them their first ever win against the Escotts. "The crowds are on the pitch, they think it's all over. It is now........!"

In the second game Forest Row were an equally strong side. The match could have gone either way. Again Tony played like a professional in goal. He was shouting at his defenders and was generally in control. From the kick off in the second half Forest Row caught Lingfield off guard and that put the visitors ahead 1-0. Again everyone played a superb game, as a team, and it wasn't long before Alex found himself in front of goal. He doesn't often miss and so that ended the match 1-1. Well played the Eagles.

Lions

The Lions opened with a hard fought match against Forest Row. An evenly fought contest finished 1-1 with the Lingfield goal scored by Harry Cox.

In the second game against Escots, Lions were really unlucky. Despite having most of the possession and several good chances Escots scored with their only attack of the game and held on to clinch a 1-0 victory - again!

Saturday 28th February 2004 vs Rusthall (Home)

Having lost already to this strong side earlier in the season, the Eagles knew that only a determined performance would be required to avoid a repeat of the previous encounter. The Eagles looked organised and kept to their position on the field.

The goalkeepers Tony (later replaced by Callum) remained alert and played well. Harry and Declan stood firm in defence and took no chances when in possession of the ball and covered for each other well. The midfield players chased every ball and Tom, Seth, Nathan and Connor defended as a unit when required. Alex looked lively up front and scored with the four chances created for him. The final score of 4-2 was deserved - well done.

Saturday 21st February vs Crowborough Athletic (Away)

This fixture was played in bitterly cold conditions and the players were rotated regularly in an effort to keep warm.

Eagles

The first match was against Crowborough's A side and the Eagles twice came from behind to level the score 2-2 before they took the lead 2-3 with a few minutes to go. The Eagles missed a number of chances to extend the lead and in the closing moments did not defend strongly enough which led to the home side's equaliser making the score 3-3. Tony deserves a special mention for making a brave save in the closing seconds. The match was entertaining and exciting for the spectators.

The second match was played against their B side and final score was 1-10. The whole team consisting of Tony, Declan, Harry, Seth, Nathan (captain), Tom and Alex battled hard in cold and heavy conditions. The goal scorers over the two matches were Harry Madkins, who completed his first hatrick for the club - well done; and also an 'on fire' Alex, who scored a total of 10 goals over both games.

Lions

Lingfield Lions made the journey to Crowborough and played really well. The first game saw a great 7-0 win. The goals were scored by Callum, Josh and Harry, and a great FOUR goals by Louis Groves including a superb header. Nice one!!

The second game followed in a similair manner with goals by Harry Cox-4 and Josh-2 rounding off a 6-1 win.

Saturday 14th February vs Crawley Down (Away)

Eagles

Lingfield Eagles won 4 - 2, and to date this was the best match for the Eagles this season. All players were determined to play well and fought hard from the first whistle and the passing was its best to date. Tony made some brave saves, Harry and Declan were strong in defence, Seth, Tom and Nathan (who opened the scoring) tirelessly chased the ball, and Alex deserved a well taken hatrick. Well done the Eagles.

Lions

On a rain and wind swept morning the boys played really well. Lingfield Lions battled for the whole match and were rewarded with a 3-1 victory.

Saturday 7th February vs Hurst Green (Away)

Eagles

Lingfield Eagles lost 2 - 3. The team struggled against a side of bigger boys, and were overrun in the first half. Seth was on hand to score from close range before half time. The second half saw a more determined effort and Tom pulled a goal back. The Eagles tried to level the score and even hit the post twice. Declan stood out during the game for his tackling and determination.

Lions

The Lions played very well against a side of various ages and came away with a well deserved 3-2 win. Special mention to Harry Cox whose goals rounded off a good team performance. Well played boys.

Saturday 6th December vs Burgess Hill (Away)

Eagles and Lions

Three really hard games were played today on a larger pitch and with 7 -a-side. Our boys adjusted superbly and came away with three good results. A 1-0 win, a 0-0 draw and a 1-0 loss. Well done to everyone.

Lingfield Eagles 8 - 1 East Grinstead Town (A)

Lions

Lingfield Lions v East Grinstead Town

A lively start from Lingfield nearly resulted in them taking an early lead. The boys seemed really focused and motivated, laying siege to the East Grinstead goal. Louis Groves and Max Potts nearly scored with Alexander Milton working tirelessly, setting up several chances. The break through came when Louis got on the end of a rebound off the keeper to slot the ball in the net. One - nil. Lingfield continued to dominate, and once again the tough tackling Rhys Child at the back made sure any threat of an attack was duly dealt with.

The second half started well, with a great solo run and shot from Harry Cox making it two - nil. Lingfield were really enjoying themselves with Oliver Gache playing a ball to Max, the ball being passed to Alexander who made it three- nil. Callum Waller in goal, was desperately trying to get involved by calling loudly for the ball whenever it came within 50 yards of him, but it was not to be as Lingfield finished the game on top, winning three - nil.

Match Two

The second game was a repeat of the first, with a good start resulting in Louis Groves putting The Lions one - nil up. They didn't have it all their own way though. East Grinstead started to get back into the game, with Rhys Child making several long clearances and Callum Waller making a great save stopping them getting an equaliser. Lingfield, realising they had to work harder, stepped it up a gear and Louis scored again to make it two - nil, scoring his third goal of the day. Nice one Louis!

Oliver Gache was now in goal, and Lingfield continued to battle hard. They went three - nil up when Harry Cox scored with a superb free kick into the bottom corner. The Lions began to take control, with Max Potts pushing on well and Alexander Milton playing a through ball to Harry who scored again. Four - nil.

Callum Waller, who had been making some hard tackles then scored to make it five - nil. He then proceeded to give away his third foul in as many minutes, leaving the crowd to wonder where he gets it from! A different referee on another day may have seen a yellow card produced. The boys continued to string together some great moves, but East Grinstead hung on, with the final whistle sounding at five - nil to Lingfield.

Two great performances well done boys!

Man of the match and captain for the next match was Callum Waller, for a couple of great saves, and a good performance in the second game out on pitch. Well done Callum.
(Thanks Dara / Dave Waller)

Lions - Olly, Josh, Harry, Max, Louis

Lions v's Forect Row, draw 0-0

Lions v's Escotts, draw 0-0

Lingfield Lions v Forest Row

A confident Lions side started brightly on a cold and sunny morning. An early amount of pressure on the Forest Row goal resulted in two corners for Lingfield, but no real chance on goal. Forest Row started to come back into the game and Louis Groves and Max Potts were working hard in midfield to contain them. On the odd occasion that Forest did get through, a thundering challenge from Rhys Child soon brought the attack to an end. Just before half time, Harry Cox had a good shot well saved, and Forest hit the bar. This was real end to end stuff!! The second half started with Joshua making a great run towards goal, but his shot was blocked by the last defender. Rhys was still doing a great job at the back. On the one occasion that Forest did reach the Lions goal, a long clearance by Callum Waller was picked up by Alexander Milton who crossed for Harry Cox whose shot went just wide.

The move of the game and it deserved a goal. Oliver Gache then put a shot just wide, but the Forest goal survived with the final score 0 - 0.

Lingfield Lions v Escots

Lingfield Lions met their arch rivals Escots in one of the toughest matches of the season. Escots appeared confident following several good results in recent weeks. This proved to be a very tight game, and the first few minutes confirmed this, with both teams having shots on goal. The closest efforts for the Lions were a Harry Cox shot, and a Louis Groves header, but Lingfield could not score. Once again, when the opposition did threaten, Rhys Child was there, making tackle after tackle with perfect timing to thwart Escots every time. Max Potts and Joshua were covering well in midfield, and Alexander Milton was running his socks off up and down the left wing, but despite all their efforts the first half remained nil nil. The second half continued in the same way, with chances falling to both side. The best chance of a break through came when Callum Waller, who had been replaced in goal by Oliver Gache at half time, played a great ball through to Harry Cox whose shot hit the cross bar. This proved to be the last real chance, and Escots hung on for a draw.

Although no goals were scored, the Lions were the better side in both matches, and the managers and boys should be well pleased with a really gutsy performance.

Man of the match, and captain for next game was Rhys Child. A great performance at the back, well done Rhys.
